Facilities at Pengelly Canine Hydrotherapy

At Penghelly Hydrotherapy we have ample parking and easy access. The pool building also houses a Hot Spa tub, electric hoists to lift disabled/heavy dogs and good coat cleaning and drying facilities. All dogs are fitted with buoyancy aids before entering the pool. There is also a well equipped veterinary surgery on hand should it be required.

Uses of Hydrotherapy

Rehabilitation
Just as in human medicine, physiotherapy following an accident or surgery can play an important role in speeding recovery and helping limbs regain full normal function. This is particularly so following an operation on a joint or bones in the leg. Swimming allows the use of the leg in a weightless environment, encouraging muscles to strengthen and work correctly again. This in turn aides pain relief and reduces stiffness. Swimming also enables us to help dogs with spinal trauma where the dog may have nerve damage affecting its leg(s) or be unable to walk.

Fitness
The power jets in the pool simulate various current strengths for the dog to swim against on a progressive basis. A one minute swim equates to one mile of hard exercise, without any possible damage to joint or limbs.

Weight Loss
This non weight bearing form of exercise is a great way of enabling our canine chums to burn off calories and live longer healthier lives.

Arthritis
Swimming or even just a session in the hot spa tub can really help in getting stiff limbs working again and reduces aches and pains.

Fun!
When all is said and done, lots of dogs just really enjoy swimming in a warm pool. They are often apprehensive at first, but ones they realise what's involved, they just can't get enough!

Arranging an appointment

To ensure the suitability and safety of your pet for swimming, we insist that your pet must be referred to us by your usual Veterinary Surgeon. We can arrange this for you but it would be normal for your vet to examine your pet prior to starting a swimming course.

Insurance

If your vet recommends swimming as part of his treatment plan for your pet, the cost can often be claimed on your pet insurance.
