Orthopaedic Referrals
This is the study of the surgery of bones and joints. It covers the repair of broken bones, damaged joints, injured ligaments and tendons, and the correction of developmental defects.
Here at Calweton Vets, we have been fortunate in having a series of Vets who have taken a keen interest in this area of Veterinary science, so that today we have both the equipment and skills to perform operations which were previously referred to specialists out of Cornwall. Coupled with a Hydrotherapy pool facility we can give dogs the best possible chance of recovery from serious orthopaedic problems.
One of the most common presentations is a ruptured cruciate ligament in the hind leg. The important thing is not only to repair the ligament but also to reduce the arthritic damage to the joint both before the operation and in the future. To this effect we carry out a specialised procedure known as a Triple Tibial Osteotomy (TTO). This gives very good results compared with other techniques available. We are able to take referrals from other practices for this operation, however owners who are registered with other veterinary practices must approach us via their vet, not directly.
We use and stock a comprehensive external fixation kit. This enables complicated fractures to be stabilised and repaired. The metal parts form a scaffold outside the leg, which is covered by a thick bandage. This reduces the problems with implants and enables correct positioning of fractures. Sometimes this is just not possible and in dwelling implants are used.
Post operatively most cases visit our hydrotherapy pool so that the affected limbs can be exercised without stress and strain due to carrying weight.
